These letters &#8220;a&#8221; are, however, almost indiscernible<\/li>\n<li>The Series number for Series 7, Series 9 and Series 15 appears with an upper case (capital) letter &#8220;A&#8221; after the Series number and slightly raised in relation to that number<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The letters &#8220;a&#8221; or &#8220;A&#8221; after the Series Number are the Spanish equivalent of the English form of &#8216;th&#8217; as in four<strong>th<\/strong>, six<strong>th<\/strong>, seventh, eigh<strong>th<\/strong>, nin<strong>th<\/strong> and fifteen<strong>th.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SERIES 18<\/h2>\n<p>By 1900 the Gremio had issued 15 Series of Inserts, including five different <a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series\/the-series-explained\/variants\/series-15-variants\/\"><strong>colour variations of Series 15<\/strong><\/a>. However, the public were becoming irritated by the repeats of Series 15 and demanded new Series. The Gremio also realised that the money from sales of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/albums\/all-the-albums\/series-1-to-16-sheets\/\">collectors&#8217; sheets<\/a><\/strong> was going into the <a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/albums\/the-albums-explained\/the-artists\/\"><strong>Artists&#8217;<\/strong><\/a> pockets. This led them to make two important decisions :<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>to immediately commission Series 16 and 17 of the Inserts<\/li>\n<li>to commission collectors&#8217; albums for Series 18 onwards, sales of which would be controlled directly by the Gremio<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure class=\"alignleft fixed\" style=\"width: 362px;\"><a class=\"zoom-hover fb\" data-fancybox-group=\"post-10603\" data-fancybox-title=\"Series 18 album page 1\" class=\"ngg-fancybox\" title=\"Series 18 album page 1\" href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/series-18-album\/Series-18-album-page-1.jpg\" data-image-id=\"345\" data-src=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/series-18-album\/Series-18-album-page-1.jpg\" data-thumbnail=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/series-18-album\/thumbs\/thumbs_Series-18-album-page-1.jpg\" data-title=\"Series 18 album page 1\" data-description=\"Series 18 album page 1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-fancybox\" src=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/series-18-album\/thumbs\/thumbs_Series-18-album-page-1.jpg\" alt=\"Series 18 album page 1\" width=\"362\" height=\"242\"><\/a><figcaption>Series 18 album page 1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is why the collectors&#8217; sheets stopped and the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/albums\/all-the-albums\/series-18-to-31-albums\/\">albums<\/a><\/strong> started, and probably explains why no collectors&#8217; sheets were produced for Series 17. This is also the reason why we show the Inserts in three groups : <a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series\/series-1-to-17-inserts\/\"><strong>Series 1 to 17,<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series\/series-18-to-c-inserts\/\"><strong>Series 18 to 33<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series-a-b-c-and-special\/\"><strong>Series A, B, C and Special<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The collectors&#8217; album for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series\/all-the-series\/series-18-to-c-inserts\/series-18\/\">Series 18<\/a><\/strong> was the first time the title of a Series was published &#8211; &#8220;Grandes Guerreros de la Historia&#8221; (Great Historical Warriors in English). Andres Sanchez Alfonsetti, Espiritu Santo, 33 &#8211; MADRID<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Translated, this means :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They are for sale in all tobacconists, cafes, and from the following shops: Cruz, 1 (postage stamps); Puerta del Sol, 1 (book shop and Writers and Artists Association); Alcala, 18 (bookshop)&#8221;.&nbsp;<em><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/em> The dictionary definition of &#8216;estanco&#8217; is not only &#8220;tobacconist&#8221;, but also &#8220;government store where monopoly goods are sold&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Special (blank) sheets are available for collecting Series 1 to 17. There are eight sheets for each series and they cost 1.5 pesetas per series. They are available from: Sr. D. Andr\u00e9s S\u00e1nchez Alfonsetti, Espiritu Santo, 33 &#8211; MADRID.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Series 32, 33, A, B and C did not have albums, so once again there are no &#8216;official&#8217; titles for these Series. However, based on the subjects shown on the Inserts we have given each Series a title as shown <a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series\/all-the-series\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Note that for Series 31, the &#8220;Sitios&#8221; in the title was a famous siege in Spanish history which took place during the &#8220;War of Independence&#8221;. The date, 2nd May, 1808, is connected and therefore this Series is believed to have been issued in 1908.<\/li>\n<li>Also, the Special Series refers to Don Quixote, published three hundred years earlier than the insert Series, in 1604.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>INDEX CARDS<\/h2>\n<p>Series 15, 16 and 17 had \u201cIndex Cards\u201d which were designed to assist the collector keep a note of which Inserts they had collected. <em>Click <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series\/index-cards\/\">here<\/a><\/strong> to see these Index Cards.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>VARIANTS<\/h2>\n<p>A number of unusual Inserts are known, which are variants of the standard ones.&nbsp;<em>Click <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series\/variants\/\">here<\/a><\/strong> to see these Variants.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>PRINTERS&#8217; SHEETS<\/h2>\n<p>The Inserts were cut individually from large sheets of card. <em>Click <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/series\/printers-sheets\/\">here<\/a><\/strong> to see some Printers&#8217; Sheets.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>THE ACTRESSES<\/h2>\n<p>Well-known Actresses from stage and (silent) screen appeared on Series 1 to 8 and then in Series 13 and 15.
