{"id":15156,"date":"2018-03-31T16:09:40","date_gmt":"2018-03-31T16:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/?page_id=15156"},"modified":"2018-09-25T19:21:32","modified_gmt":"2018-09-25T19:21:32","slug":"tax-stamps","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/inserts.org.uk\/index.php\/tax-stamps\/","title":{"rendered":"Tax Stamps on matchboxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many governments have used Tax Stamps to raise extra funds for their Exchequers by imposing a specific tax on high-volume consumable goods, like matchboxes and cigarettes.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest known use of Tax Stamps on matchboxes is during the American Civil War (1861 &#8211; 65) where they were introduced to help the North offset costs of fighting the South.
